How to ask for donations and fundraise money for personal cause?

I was invited by Lead America to be apart of their summer program. I chose the Ambadors Abroad program which costs roughly 6,000 dollars minimum. I'm not quite sure how to ask for donations or fundraise for a personal cause. Is it unlikely to do this because it's not a specific group or organization that I'm fundraising for? Please help. All suggestions are welcome.
