Is political correctness a way of doing things?

without using common sense. If there was a pack of pit bull dogs killing all the cats in the area. Would you check all the Beagle's mouths for cat hair? It just seems that political correctness is voiding common sense. What do you think? And for political correctness sake, I'm not picking on any race or other group.
